German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on Sunday for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities intensify.
Merz’s visit is being viewed as a strong signal of Germany’s continued support for Ukraine. He is expected to discuss military assistance, defence cooperation and measures to strengthen Ukraine’s ability to withstand Russian attacks.
The German chancellor said Ukraine was entering an important period and stressed that Kyiv could continue relying on Berlin.
The visit comes as Russia has increased its use of missiles and jet-powered drones against Ukrainian targets. Moscow has also warned foreign nationals and diplomats to leave Kyiv, saying further retaliatory strikes could follow.
Ukraine has continued developing its own defence capabilities while seeking additional support from European allies.
The conflict has now continued for more than four years, with no clear breakthrough toward a lasting peace agreement.
European governments remain concerned that further escalation could threaten regional security and increase pressure on neighbouring countries.
Merz’s discussions in Kyiv are therefore expected to focus not only on immediate military assistance but also on Ukraine’s long-term security and European defence cooperation.
